Cheyenne Frontier Days Transport yourself to the past by attending Cheyenne Frontier Days, happening from July 20 to July 29. These 10 days are packed with events. Join the crowds for the Grand Parade, one of the most popular events. Starting at the Wyoming Capitol, the parade showcases marching bands, antique carriages, and floats. Walk through history by visiting the Old Frontier Town and Indian Village. For the kids and the kids-at-heart, hop on a ride at the carnival. Looking for more excitement? Watch barrel racing and wild horse racing at the rodeo. When the sun sets, Frontier Days become Frontier Nights. See the World Champion crowned at the Championship Bull Riding event or rock out at a concert. This year, performers include Florida Georgia Line, Toby Keith, and Eric Church. more Laramie County Fair No summer is complete without a classic county fair. The Laramie County Fair takes place from July 30 to August 11. Plan to attend a show for your favorite farm animal, such as a Horse Show, Dog Show, Guinea Pig Show, or Alpaca Show. You and your furry best friend even have the opportunity to take part in the Open Dog Show. Registration to partake begins an hour before the event. Other contests include a Pie Baking Contest followed fittingly by a Pie Eating Contest. For excitement seekers, take in a rodeo or the Demolition Derby. Cheyenne Arts Festival For the artists and art-appreciators, the Cheyenne Arts Festival is scheduled for Friday, August 17, through Sunday, August 19, at the Cheyenne Depot Museum and Depot Plaza in downtown Cheyenne. This free festival begins with an artist reception on Friday evening. All weekend, the festival showcases local artists through visual art exhibits as well as music and dance performances. Workshops are also offered to those who want to explore their creative side. Greek Festival Wrap up your summer in the most delicious way by attending the annual Greek Festival. Bring your appetite to the Greek Festival on Friday, September 14 from 4 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, September 15 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Frontier Park Exhibition Hall. Enjoy authentic Greek food, including gyros, kalamari, souvlaki, and, of course, pastries. Stop by Yia Yia's Coffee Shop for single servings of pastries, like baklava. While you eat, watch performances of traditional Greek folk dancing. If the Greek music moves you, join in the dancing. Want to pay in the local currency? At one time, Medicine Bow National Forest, Routt National Forest, and Thunder Basin National Grassland were all three separate areas. However, in 1995 they were administratively combined since they're close to each other and offer similar resources. If you want to explore this beautiful section of protected land that covers parts of Wyoming and Colorado, load up the car and take a road trip to the forest. Go for a Hike With almost 2.9 million acres of protected land between Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland, you'll find plenty of great opportunities to go for a hike. For amazing views of the area, hike to the summit of Medicine Bow Peak, which is the highest peak in the Snowy Range. You'll find several different trails that take you there. The 1.6-mile Lewis Lake Trailhead is the shortest route and offers a lovely view along the way. Another option is the 3.6-mile Lake Marie Trailhead. While it's longer, it also has a more gradual climb. Take a Scenic Drive If you'd rather take a scenic drive through the area, you'll find a variety of routes with beautiful views. One of the more popular options is the Snowy Range Scenic Byway. Twenty-nine miles of the route winds its way through the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests. Driving time from one forest boundary to the other is about an hour without any stops. Held every year toward the end of July, Cheyenne Frontier Days is the largest outdoor rodeo in the world. When you visit the rodeo, you'll find 10 days of great food, fun rides, and plenty of excitement. Learn more about the history of Cheyenne Frontier Days and discover what you can expect this year. History of Cheyenne Frontier Days Cheyenne Frontier Days started in 1897 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Events for that first rodeo were exhibitions that tested a cowboy's skill, including bronco busting, pony races, and steer roping. The first rodeo was so successful it expanded to two days and added a parade the following year. As the years went on and the rodeo continued to grow in popularity, more events were added. Today Cheyenne Frontier Days is a 10-day event that's held at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Arena and throughout Cheyenne and draws an estimated 200,000 people every year. more Stop by for the Free Breakfast Held on the Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of the event from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., the free pancake breakfast is a great way to meet people from around the world and fill up on a hearty breakfast that will help you enjoy the rest of the rodeo. During the breakfast, volunteers will serve over 100,000 pancakes, 475 gallons of syrup, 630 pounds of butter, 3,000 pounds of ham, 520 gallons of coffee, and 9,200 cartons of milk. The breakfast takes place at the historic Cheyenne Depot Square in downtown Cheyenne. Check Out the Midway Whether you're looking for exciting rides or unique food, head to the carnival midway. The carnival is open from 10:30 a.m. to midnight on all 10 days of Cheyenne Frontier Days. You can find some of your favorite snacks and meals at the midway. You can even discover some one-of-a-kind offerings, like a deep-fried cheeseburger with sugar. Head up in the Ferris wheel to get a great view of the surrounding area or jump on one of the thrill rides for some heart-pounding excitement. See the Grand Parade On both Saturdays, Tuesday, and Thursday of Cheyenne Frontier Days, travel to the Wyoming State Capitol at 9 a.m. to see the start of the Grand Parade. After leaving the Capitol, the parade then heads down to the Cheyenne Depot Square before returning to the Capitol. The 90-minute parade features some of the top marching bands, floats, antique carriages, horse-drawn vehicles, automobiles, and horses with riders wearing period clothes. Tour Old Frontier Town Open every day of the event from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Old Frontier Town is the place to go to celebrate some of Cheyenne's rich Western heritage. The town is free to enter and located between the Indian Village and the Old West Museum. When you stop by, you can play games, see the animals at the petting zoo, shop the artisan booths, and check out the educational experiences and exhibits. Guernsey State Park isn't the biggest park in Wyoming, but it offers beautiful views and interesting historical sites. You can find it right near the town of Guernsey, which is along US-26 and east of where the route turns north and joins I-25. Guernsey isn't an international attraction like Yellowstone up in the northwest part of the state, but you can find plenty of things to do if you want to spend a day or a weekend at the park. Enjoy the Lake Guernsey State Park surrounds the Guernsey Reservoir. This reservoir came into being in 1927, the year the North Platte River Dam started operation. It's one of several artificial reservoirs in southeast Wyoming and residents from all over can come by to enjoy one of the few open bodies of water in the area. Guernsey State Park allows all kinds of boats into the water, so long as the water level is high enough to reach the boat launches. They also have two beach areas by the Sandy Beach Campground. more Explore the Hiking Trails Just after the Guernsey Reservoir filled up, the Civilian Conservation Corps built up the surrounding area. They created the campgrounds, boat launches, trails, and cabins that visitors now use whey they stop by the park. Thanks to their efforts, the park has 14 miles of hiking trails, most of which take you across the western side of the trail. Thanks to the rugged terrain, the trails offer plenty of great scenic viewpoints and challenging slopes that experienced hikers will appreciate. Dive Into Guernsey's History Guernsey State Park is home to a museum that overlooks the reservoir from a hill on the east side. The museum describes the natural and cultural history of the area, including how the historic Oregon Trail led right through Guernsey on its way along the North Platte River. The museum itself is a National Historic Landmark, built nearly a century ago as part of the CCC's efforts to build the park. You can still see a set of ruts worn into the sandstone by the river just south of the town. Spend the Night The park has 245 individual campsites for tents and campers. Two of the campgrounds, Sandy Point and Sandy Beach, have water and electrical hookups for RVs and camper trailers.  The park also offers a set of four permanent yurts, each with a magnificent view of the reservoir and the surrounding area. The yurts cost extra, but they give you an unforgettable experience while you're staying at the park. Guernsey State Park offers visitors a quiet but fun time along the Guernsey Reservoir. The lake offers swimming and boating opportunities, and you might even catch a glimpse of the wildlife that comes from miles around to drink their fill. Southeast Wyoming tends to be a dry, barren place, so it's nice to get away from that sometimes and enjoy the desert life and atmosphere you can find around a reservoir. The Historic Plains Hotel Visit the historic downtown neighborhood of Cheyenne to find this landmark that functions both as a modern hotel and historic landmark. The hotel dates back to 1911 when Cheyenne was flourishing from the success of the oil and cattle industry. Interestingly, some people believe that the hotel is haunted. Visitors have reported disembodied laughter and voices in certain parts of the building. But the modern guest of the Historic Plains Hotel is far more likely to simply enjoy the unmatched amenities and convenient proximity to Cheyenne's vibrant arts and culture district. more Cheyenne Botanic Gardens Take a stroll among the carefully cultivated gardens and conservatories at the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens. Greater Cheyenne Greenway The seeds for the Greater Cheyenne Greenway were first sown in 1990 by the Crow Creek Greenway Committee, which dreamed of creating a network of tree-lined corridors for the enjoyment of the area's residents and visitors. Today, the greenway comprises 37 miles of paths that run through open, natural environments. The greenway is popular with both cyclists and joggers. Students of ecology and history also regularly use the greenway as an open-air classroom. Future plans for the greenway will expand the paths to completely encircle the city of Cheyenne in a continuous loop, seamlessly connecting neighborhoods and offering a contiguous alternative to motorized traffic. While the cemetery has been interring the city's most distinguished citizens for over 100 years, it's not a strictly historical cemetery. Whether you are a tourist, or a local, you won't walk away disappointed. Luxury Diner Luxury Diner is located at 1401 W. Lincolnway. Be aware that if you plan on dining at this gem during the week, it is only open until 3 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, they stay open later, until 1:30 a.m. Local legend has it that the Luxury Diner, which is located in an old luxury dining car, used to be a working trolley on the streets of Cheyenne from 1894 until 1912. Eventually, it became the Luxury Diner in 1964. Everything at this restaurant is prepared from scratch with local ingredients, with some of the recipes being decades old. The Luxury Diner has a different breakfast and lunch special every day. Some of their specialties include their Philly cheesesteak sandwich, sausage gravy, and green chili. more Poor Richard's Restaurant Poor Richard's Restaurant is located at 2233 East Lincolnway and is open Monday through Saturday until 9 p.m., with a short break between lunch and dinner. Poor Richard's is a fine dining restaurant that is family friendly. They are well known in the area since they have been open since 1977. This is the place locals go to dine on perfectly cooked steak, seafood, and pasta. They even have a large salad bar, which has their famous hot bacon dressing. The Albany Restaurant and Bar The Albany Restaurant and Bar is your one-stop-shop in Cheyenne for both food and drinks. They are located at 1506 Capitol Ave., and, like Poor Richard's Restaurant, the restaurant is open Monday through Saturday until 9 p.m. with a break between lunch and dinner. Their bar is open from 11 a.m. until they decide to close. If you're looking for a drink-to-go, they do have a beer and liquor store attached to the restaurant which is open until 10 p.m. The Albany has been operated by the same family since 1942, making them a local favorite for over 75 years. The Albany serves a large variety of food, from salads and sandwiches to steaks and seafood. You even have the choice of a few different Mexican dishes. And you won't want to pass up the opportunity to try the local specialty, breaded and deep-fried bull nuts, served with cocktail sauce. T-Joe's Steakhouse and Saloon T-Joe's is located at 12700 E I-80 and is open Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner.  The bar is open Friday and Saturday until 2 a.m. T-Joe's is named after a world-famous local bucking bronco that always gave riders more than they bargained for at the Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo. T-Joe's offers its patrons steak, chicken, or seafood dinners, all of which come with two sides. You can even try Rocky Mountain Oysters here if you are adventurous enough. If you visit any of these legendary restaurants, not only will you enjoy a delicious meal, but you'll be sure to run into numerous locals that have been dining there most of their lives.
